Southland Dental Care – Hayward Dentist – Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

A straighter smile is not only beautiful, but ensures you have a healthy bite. However, with so many braces options to choose from, choosing the right one for your smile can be a tough decision. At Southland Dental Care, our Hayward dentists and staff want to provide the best options that can meet your dental goals. By offering both traditional braces and Invisalign, we are dedicated to providing patients with the best braces option for their smile. When choosing between these two popular treatments, be sure to consider the following:

Benefits of Each Treatment

Made of metal brackets and wires, traditional braces can be customized with tooth colored or colorful bands, making treatment a fun and personalized experience particularly for young patients and teens. As these brackets are adhered to the surface of your teeth, treatment is specialized specifically for patients who have severe cases of malocclusions, or misalignment of the bite, crowded or gapped teeth, or teeth that are rotated.

This aesthetically-driven treatment is perfect for adults and young adults whose jaws have finished growing yet who have minor to moderate alignment problems. Invisalign® uses nearly invisible aligning trays that allow you the convenience of subtly straightening your teeth without anyone noticing. As they are removable, you are only required to wear them 22 hours a day in order to get the most out of your treatment.

Drawbacks of Each Treatment

Unlike Invisalign®, traditional metal braces are noticeable and non-removable during treatment. Even if you opt for tooth colored brackets, the oral appliance is more noticeable than a clear aligner.
Maintaining your oral health can be more challenging as brackets are bonded directly to your teeth. There are specifically designed flossing instruments and brushes that assist in keep up your at home oral care regimen.

Compared to braces, these clear align trays are aesthetically more pleasing that traditional metal braces. However, Invisalign® is not as effective at correcting complex bite alignment issues. Patients who have complex bite issues, severely rotated or crowded teeth, and other cases, traditional braces will provide a more effective treatment. Additionally, for patients who find themselves to be forgetful in wearing their trays can inhibit the success of their treatment, rendering it unproductive. Invisalign® requires consistent wearing of the trays for each aligner to work.
